About
Amantes Lapides is Latin for stone lovers. The title of a poem I am currently composing starring the lovers Lethaea and Olenos. These lovers were briefly mentioned in the Metamorphoses by Ovid, specifically in the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. Next to nothing is know about them, except a few lines of poetry, which mention Lethaea's beauty and her curse to be a stone statue upon Mt. Ida. Olenos in love with her, whether they were lovers, or married is unknown but he also met the same fate, although it is unknown how he came to be with her. Theories surround the couple; he wanted to be with her, or he somehow tried to take the blame for whatever crime his love committed against the gods. As my poem progress I'll be posting snippets here.
As a Classics student these stories intrigue me, the ones never told, or lost with time. Such cruel fate time is, and it is my hope to put myself in the shoes of an Ancient Greek and imagine such a tale. As I travel along my own path, I'll place my thoughts upon this blog. Perhaps one day someone will discover the story of these lovers, until they do I'll spin my own tale, and tell my own story.
